Hudson River School

I’ve always loved the Hudson River School painters. I studied them when I built my second painting robot, and was trying to understand everything I could about oil painting from a technical perspective. They understood how to use the medium so precisely, and so luminously.

I’ve lived next to the Hudson River for a dozen years now, and I find it provides a great balance to city life. I haven’t painted much since we started building Rookery full-time, so I figured it was time, and that I’d try a Hudson River School painting.

I have a particular technique for preparing a canvas for painting that I’ve adapted from my art lessons in Bhaktapur, Nepal. I started with two square yards of raw canvas from Dick Blick. I also needed a new sewing machine, so we visited the wonderful Crown Machine Services at 108th & Broadway. I ended up with the Elna Sew Fun and it’s amazing.
